Macintosh Lab Classes: Digital Imaging, Layout and Illustration

Note: All computer-based classes are taught on Apple Macintosh. PC users will find the Mac program environments to be virtually identical to the PC versions. All computers in the Macintosh labs are equipped with Iomega Zip drives (100MB disks, Mac or PC format, only).

Basic Macintosh: Using Your iMac and MacOS9.x (6 hours)

Learn how to set up and operate the loveable Apple iMac computer. The Macintosh operating system, version 9.x, is covered. This workshop is a great primer for the Digital Imaging and Layout workshops.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of  Mac OS or Windows 95 ­ 2000

Digital Imaging: Introduction, Adobe PhotoShop 6.x (6 hours)

Book: Photoshop 6: The Essentials by P. Gaydos (Booklet available at DBCC Bookstore) $49

A workshop to help the complete novice get comfortable with Photoshop's environment and functionality. The student will learn about color modes, file formats and resolution. Basic output is also covered.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Mac OS or Windows 95 ­ 2000

Digital Imaging: Advanced, Adobe PhotoShop 6.x (6 hours)

The student will learn how to use layers, adjustment layers and channels to effectively composite several images together. The powerful new type tools in Photoshop 6 are covered, as well as more advanced output.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Mac OS or Windows 95 ­ 2000 and Introduction to Adobe Photoshop 6.x Workshop or equivalent Photoshop skills.

Digital Imaging: Photoshop 6.x Tips, Tricks & Effects (6 hours)

Book: Photoshop 6: Tips and Tricks, Enhancing Your Photos by P. Gaydos (Booklet available at DBCC Bookstore) $49

The student will gain insight into some of the pro's secrets. Learn how to take an "ok" image from your scanner or digital camera and make it a great image when it prints out of your inkjet printer. Master the art of color correction and retouching. Learn some scanning and output tips.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Mac OS or Windows 95 ­ 2000 and Advanced Adobe Photoshop 6.x Workshop or equivalent Photoshop skills.

Digital Illustration: Introduction to Adobe Illustrator 9.x (6 hours)

This workshop helps the complete novice get comfortable with Illustrator's environment and functionality. The student will learn how to draw with the pen (Bezier) tool and how to use the powerful text features. Basic color, file formats and output are covered.

Digital Illustration: Advanced Adobe Illustrator 9.x (6 hours)

The student will learn to use layers, pathfinder functions and masks and compound paths to create seemingly complex illustrations quickly. Import-export, rasterization and filters are covered, as is more advanced output.

Digital Layout: Introduction to QuarkXPress 4.x (6 hours)

Book: QuarkXPress 4: The Essentials by P. Gaydos (Booklet available at DBCC Bookstore) $49

This workshop will introduce beginners to the environment and functionality of Quark. Working with single-page documents, the student will learn to import images, work with Quark's powerful typographical tools, create runarounds and link text boxes. Basic file formats and output is covered.

Digital Layout: Advanced QuarkXPress 4.x (6 hours)

Book: QuarkXPress 4: Beyond the Basics by P. Gaydos (Booklet available at DBCC Bookstore) $49

Students will learn how to create multi-page documents. They will learn how to use master pages, set up auto page numbering, use Pantone and Process colors and collect for output. More advanced output is also covered.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Mac OS or Windows 95 ­ 2000 and Introduction to Adobe Photoshop 6.x Workshop or equivalent Photoshop skills
